Capturing you two in your element is MY biggest thrill. You bring the romance.
I'll bring the energy
Moravian University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania is one of the Lehigh Valley’s most notable spots to have an Engagement Session. Favorite spots include God’s Acre (the oldest Moravian cemetery in North America), the historic admissions building’s stone architecture, the campus courtyard, and the cherry-blossom-lined side streets that bloom in early-to-mid April. The grounds blend 18th-century colonial buildings with quiet, tree-shaded paths.
Matthew and Ashley met at their church, and when it came time to plan their engagement session, we ended up on the Moravian University campus, and I’m so glad we did! There’s a reason this part of Bethlehem keeps drawing photographers and couples back for their sessions. It’s a playground for photographers.
We shot in late April, right at the tail end of cherry blossom season, and the timing could not have been better! The trees were full, the sun was out for some parts of the session, and it just overall felt like quintessential spring time in the Lehigh Valley.
What I loved about shooting in and around Moravian is that you get the typical colonial Bethlehem vibe without putting you in the middle of Main Street traffic. You get the brick architecture, gorgeous flower beds, colonial-era buildings, canopied walkways — but it all feels intentional and quiet, kind of like it’s like Main Street’s quieter, more contemplative cousin. You can actually breathe and pay attention to each other instead of dodging people on the sidewalk!
Here’s a fun behind-the-scenes detail: the sun actually went behind clouds right when the “picture perfect” sunset was supposed to happen. Not ideal, but you can’t control the weather! (or so they say…)
So I improvised! The “sunset” you see in some of the later photos is actually my flash with a couple of warming filters and diffusion stacked on. Throw it behind Matthew and Ashley and with the right settings, you can mimic the way the sun would have looked if it had cooperated! Same warm backlight – It’s one of those moves that comes from years of shooting at sunset and knowing what the light actually does
I tell couples this all the time: the weather is going to do whatever it wants on the day of. The job of a photographer is to make sure that doesn’t matter!
Take a look at some of my favorites in the gallery below, and check out the FAQ at the end!

The best time for engagement photos at Moravian University is 60-90 minutes before sunset, but with a caveat unique to historic Bethlehem: because Main Street and downtown are surrounded by taller colonial buildings, the sun tends to disappear behind architecture before it actually sets. On the Moravian campus itself, particularly around God’s Acre and the open courtyards, you get more sky and a longer usable golden hour than you’d get on Main Street.
No, a permit is not required. The surrounding grounds are available to the public to use.
Cherry blossoms in Bethlehem typically bloom in early-to-mid April, with peak bloom lasting roughly five days to a week depending on weather. The most concentrated cluster of trees is around Payrow Plaza and the Garden of Serenity near Bethlehem City Hall, but blooming cherry trees are scattered along the side streets near Moravian University as well. If you’re hoping to catch them during your engagement session, schedule for the second or third week of April and stay flexible, as the bloom window is short and very weather-dependent!
The cherry-blossom-lined side streets just off the main campus are consistently overlooked. Most couples (and most photographers) gravitate toward the obvious spots like the courtyard, theiconic Main Street stretch — but a one-block walk in almost any direction puts you in front of completely different architecture: brick alleyways, garden walls, antique colonial doorways, and blossoming trees that nobody else is shooting in front of. Those side-street pockets often produce the most distinctive images of the day!
A documentary-style engagement session prioritizes movement and genuine interaction over forcefully posed setups. you’ll spend most of the time walking, talking, laughing, and being yourselves while I work around you! That type of approach matters because our session doubles as a trial run for wedding day coverage, where the same unscripted philosophy is what makes for photos that actually feel like the moment did. Couples who book engagement sessions with me often go on to book their wedding with me for that exact reason: they see how the approach translates into the end result.
