Born to Run Farm is a wedding venue in Glen Gardner, New Jersey, in Hunterdon County’s western hills. The property pairs light-filled getting-ready rooms with open pasture views, a willow-shaded pond for first looks, and a patio cigar lounge. Its reception layout spreads guests across a tented quiet lounge, patio, and dance floor.

Getting Ready at Born to Run Farm

The getting-ready rooms at Born to Run Farm were a genuine surprise! There was lots of light, lots of character, and plenty of space to actually work in. That combination is rarer than it should be. Most getting-ready spaces make you choose between good light and enough room to move, and here I didn’t have to. I was able to document all of the joy of Allison and her bridesmaids as they got ready for the festivities.

The staff set the tone for the whole day. They were overly welcoming in the best way, unbelievably helpful, and kind in a way that felt personal rather than professional. By mid-morning it felt less like I was a vendor working a room and more like we’d built a team for the day. That matters more than people realize. When the venue staff are warm and invested, everyone in the building loosens up, and loose people photograph honestly.

The Willow Tree First Look at Born to Run Farm

They did their first look by the willow tree near the pond, and that spot was gorgeous at basically any hour. Normally I want trees in the frame to protect against harsh sun, because you rarely get to schedule a ceremony around the best light; the calendar decides that for you, not the couple. So open properties usually make me nervous.

Born to Run Farm didn’t. The sun couldn’t really find a bad spot here. You either had the view opening out over the hills of the region, or you had the willows, or you had the pond. Every direction gave me a natural backdrop, which meant I could stay focused on what was actually happening between them instead of hunting for a place to stand.

I also don’t like spending a ton of time on portraits. The point of the day is for Allison and Caelan to enjoy each other and the people who showed up for them. So we made our portraits, and then we got straight back to the day.

Cocktail Hour, the Cigar Lounge, and Blue Hour at Born to Run Farm

Cocktail hour rolled into the cigar lounge out on the patio, which Caelan enjoyed, and then blue hour landed right before dusk — three completely different looks inside a short window, all of it organic.

What stuck with me most was how the space was laid out. There was something for everybody. You could sit on the patio with a cigar or a drink if that was your thing. There was a secondary tent if you wanted to sit and talk away from the music. And then there was the obvious dance floor for the people who came to dance.

By the end of the night, every single person was doing something. That’s not normal. Usually it’s one room, one volume, and you’re either dancing or shouting across a table at someone. This felt refreshing and, from a documentary standpoint, it meant there was always a real moment happening somewhere.

The willow tree near the pond. It holds up at nearly any time of day, gives you shade and a soft backdrop at once, and sits far enough from the getting-ready spaces that a couple actually gets a private moment before anyone sees them.

The layout splits guests instead of stacking them. There’s a patio cigar lounge, a secondary tent for conversation away from the music, and a dance floor — so every guest has somewhere to be. Blue hour just before dusk is worth stepping outside for.
